Amidst the current construction skills shortage, NLT Training Services is helping make it easier for companies to upskill their staff or for people to enter the sector.

NLT has added a new course covering safety in the construction industry to its training line up. The new CSCS Construction Safety Awareness course is endorsed by Build UK, a representative organisation for the UK construction industry, as standard training for all operatives on site.

It is designed for people who have no previous experience or safety knowledge in the industry.

The law requires that each operator is given adequate training by their employer so that they become competent to operate the machinery which they use. Having a CSCS Construction Safety Card will enable candidates to work on a construction site.

While not a legal requirement, the new course is widely recognised as a great way of demonstrating that a worker has at least basic health and safety knowledge.

With around 54,000 non-fatal injuries to construction workers in Great Britain each year and around 79,000 workers suffering from work-related ill health [1], this one-day course covers potential hazards when working on site and provide practical advice on keeping yourself and your colleagues safe. It covers both individual and employer responsibilities, including what you can do if you think anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk.

The course content includes:

  • the need to prevent accidents
  • health and safety law
  • how your role fits into the control and management of the site
  • risk assessments and method statements
  • performing safely and asking for advice
  • how to report unsafe acts to prevent an accident

Candidates who successfully complete the course will achieve a QCF Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, accredited by the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) in line with the requirements set by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC).

NPORS is one of the UK’s leading accreditation and registration bodies which offers accreditation across a number of sectors, including construction and industrial to agricultural, ports and marine.

The one-day course is being held at NLT’s Scunthorpe and Chesterfield sites. Following the training, all individuals will be assessed on the day to achieve the NPROS Level 1 Award.

For delegates wishing to also apply for their Green Card, NLT will arrange for them to undertake a separate CITB test online at a local testing centre.
