With one in six workers suffering from anxiety, depression and unmanageable stress each year, NLT is helping employers address mental health in the workplace with the introduction of two new courses – Level 2 and Level 3 First Aid for Mental Health.

The NUCO Training-accredited one-day courses, which are delivered through associates of NLT, are designed to raise awareness of mental health difficulties, create a positive mental health culture in the workplace and help employers and their staff avoid the pitfalls of ignoring mental health issues, namely:

  • 74% of people with a mental health problem for more than a year are out of work
  • 55% of those with depression or anxiety for more than a year are out of work
  • 49% of workers would not be comfortable disclosing a mental health issue at work
  • Workplace mental ill-health costs employers around £26 billion per year
  • In 2017/18, there were 4 million days lost to work-related stress

Delivered at NLT’s Chesterfield and Scunthorpe sites, both courses can also be delivered in the workplace. NUCO Training is the UK’s largest independent provider of First Aid Training.

Both courses are designed to give attendees the knowledge to identify suspected mental health conditions in colleagues. However, the Level 3 First Aid for Mental Health course is specifically for managers and supervisors, who are empowered to make changes in the workplace, to show them how to support and help individuals with mental health issues.

Topics covered including:

  • What is mental health
  • Why people develop mental health conditions
  • What the role of a mental health first aider is
  • Knowing how to provide advice and practical support
  • Knowing how to recognise and manage stress
  • Understanding the impact of substance abuse on mental health
  • Understanding the first aid action plan for mental health and be able to put it into place
  • Knowing how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace
  • Recognising a range of mental health conditions: Level 2 and 3 – depressions, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, self-harm. Level 3 (exclusively) – PTSD, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia.
