A global survey of 860 HR leaders by consultancy Gartner found that 60% of respondents put training for leader and manager effectiveness.

Leadership and management training was identified ahead of organisational and change management (53%); employee experience (47%); recruiting (47%) and the future of work (42%) as one of the five key HR trends in 2023.

The increased need for leadership and management training in workplaces is attributed to the modern work environment which has been brought into sharp focus following the pandemic.

The disruption, constant change, uncertainty in the workplace and hybrid working has affected employees differently; some feel anxious, others disconnected, resistant to change, and work in silos; all of which lowers employee engagement and trust.

Today’s workplaces, Gartner found, require leaders to be more ‘authentic, empathetic and adaptive’, specifically:

  • Adaptive: Enable support and flexibility that fits team members’ unique needs
  • Authentic: Act with purpose and enable true self-expression, for both their teams and themselves
  • Empathetic: Show genuine concern, care, and respect for employees’ well-being
