The successful completion of the CMI course – Principles of Leadership and Management Level 3, has resulted in a significant promotion for Callum Gorman.

Callum has been promoted from supervisor to Production Manager at Chesterfield-based UK Chrome, the UK’s leader in specialised electroplating.

Aged just 22 years old, Callum began his career with UK Chrome as a 17-year-old Level 3 apprentice mechanical engineer, however, was always keen to add further qualifications to his CV.

Callum was asked by his employer if he wanted to do the course with NLT Training Services and he jumped at the chance.

He said: “I wanted the security that having qualifications gives you in your career. They open doors, which is exactly what the CMI Leadership and Management course has done for me.”

Over nine months Callum combined studying for the course with his job. “I really enjoyed the course, particularly where I was able to gather evidence in my workplace and apply it to the course theory. It really opened my eyes to the role of management and things that had never come on my radar before that I realised were an intrinsic part of good management and leadership. I have a new appreciation for management now.”

Having not written essays and reports since leaving school, Callum particularly welcomed the support of his NLT mentor, Dawn Reay who completed her CMI-accredited Level 5 Business Coaching and Mentoring certificate with NLT Training Services earlier this year.

He explained: “Dawn kept me on track and helped me approach the course in a structured way. We took it three questions at a time with Dawn giving me feedback via weekly Zoom calls. This kept me focussed. She also pointed me in the direction of resources, like YouTube videos, which I found really useful.

“It was a completely different way of working but it’s left me keen to do more. I would really like to do the next level.”

With Principles of Leadership and Management Level 3 now under his belt, Callum has set his sights on further progression within UK Chrome.

“The company has just rebranded and is investing heavily in the site, so I am very keen to progress my career with UK Chrome. There are lots of opportunities opening up in the business, and having this qualification has given me the confidence to pursue them. It’s a really exciting time in my career,” added Callum.
