The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Menopause Society have designated October as World Menopause Month with 18 October being World Menopause Day.

With menopausal women being the fastest-growing demographic in the workplace; NLT Training Services is urging employers to be aware of their Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity responsibilities they have relating to the menopause transition.

Within the Equality Act 2010, menopause is covered by at least two of the nine protected characteristics – gender and age. However, in some cases where the effects of menopause cause a long-term impact this could also be considered as a disability. It can also affect far more than simply cis females of a particular age.

In addition to being discriminatory, employers who don’t support their employees’ health and wellbeing risk losing staff. According to a July 2022 McKinsey report, uncaring leaders were the reason 36% of employees decided to leave their job.

It is estimated that a quarter of menopausal women will experience debilitating menopause symptoms, forcing some out of the workplace completely.

World Menopause Day

Held every year on the 18 October and led by the International Menopause Society, World Menopause Day aims to raise awareness of the menopause and support options for improving health and wellbeing.

This year, the theme for World Menopause Day is Cognition and Mood. Women commonly report memory or cognition changes associated with the menopause transition and menopause. This is often referred to as ‘brain fog’. Memory problems in menopause are reported by up to two thirds of women.

Starting conversations, shifting mindsets and embedding menopause support in the workplace is a key step to employers meeting both their legal and moral obligations when it comes to menopause. By positively addressing menopause, companies are supporting equality, diversity and inclusion, in the workplace.

Sarah Temperton, Chief Executive of NLT Training Services, said: “Menopause, and the sometimes devastating effects it can have in women, have been put under the spotlight and can’t be ignored any longer. Any responsible employer has a duty both legally and morally to understand their role and responsibilities to women going through menopause in the workplace.”
