Companies urged to invest in mental health training to avoid The Great Resignation
Two years on, the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on workers’ health and well-being are leading to The Great Resignation, with a third of UK workers considering a career change in 2022.
As workers return to the workplace, NLT Training Services is urging employers to ensure that mental health does not slip off the corporate agenda following research by South Westminster Business Alliance that revealed that one in five managers do not believe their company to consider mental health to be a priority in 2022.
Research conducted by GRiD, the industry body for the group risk protection sector, found that 38% of employees felt their mental health had deteriorated because of the pandemic, with almost a third (27%) expressing concerns about their physical and financial health too.
Remote work, while literally a life-saver and certainly a job-saver, has come with costs. The effect of pandemic burnout is resulting in The Great Resignation as people reassess their work life balance.
The ability to work at any time has turned into working all the time. Parents and caregivers have been stretched past the breaking point, combining work with home schooling and caring for children and relatives, and are now facing burn-out as they return to the workplace.
Sarah Temperton, Chief Executive of NLT Training Services said: “In a year where COVID-19 is still a worry for many, workers are also experiencing the biggest squeeze on their pay packets in 30 years as the cost of living continues to outstrip wage growth, it’s important that employers are mindful of mental health to avoid them resigning or disengaging with the workplace.
“With the current skill shortages and difficulties in hiring, employers cannot afford to lose staff. Investing in mental health training and initiatives for both managers and workers can not only help you avoid the challenging recruitment process, but it also improves employee wellbeing too.”
NLT has developed a bespoke package of health and wellbeing training for managers enabling them to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to spot the signs of poor mental health and help companies prevent a downward spiral of reduced engagement and productivity.
