In these unprecedented times of social distancing, as you can’t come to us we thought we’d bring our training associates to you. If you haven’t already, meet John Hunter, our CCNSG trainer.

Being witness to death, amputation and head injuries in his 48-year career in the construction and refineries industries means that John understands acutely the importance of health and safety; as he says himself, ‘it’s a serious business.’

We put a few questions to John to find out more.

How did you get into the industry?

I began my career as an apprentice marine engineer however problems with my knees led me to change career and I joined the refineries as a fitter working my way up the ladder to charge hand and supervisor before becoming a manager responsible for two refineries.

I was responsible for people across a range of jobs, including scaffolders and erectors to electricians. However, the part of my job I really enjoyed was dealing with the apprentices. Every year we took on 12 apprentices and I got personally involved in their training. I really enjoyed sharing my knowledge and experience with them and this sparked my love of training. I subsequently left the refinery to become a self employed Health & Safety Advisor and NVQ Verifier and Assessor.

What do you enjoy about the industry?

I am officially retirement age but not retired and certainly have no intention to do so. I love meeting people and enjoy the camaraderie within the industry. I have met some real characters over the years and I have been in the industry so long that I often bump into people I worked with many years ago in my CCNSG training sessions. I much prefer the training side though as it does involve early morning starts!

What are your interests outside work?

Outside work, walking my two long haired retrievers keeps me fit and busy and I also enjoy DIY.
