With a promotion on the horizon, Mike Murphy was keen to further his people management skills.

His learning, however, had to fit around his busy job of workshop supervisor at the Bracknell depot of Carrier Rental Systems (UK) Ltd. Being a temperature-controlled carrier business, the summer months in particular are busy for Mike.

Having previously done an Open University (OU) Environmental Studies module three years ago, Mike was keen to find a course that would not only fit around his job, but also his preferred style of learning. He said: “I found the OU modules deadlines a bit rigid and needed something more flexible that could also be completed online.”

After searching online for courses, Mike discovered NLT Training Services and CMI Bitesize.

I wanted something that I would be able to jump on and do 20 minutes of learning during my lunchtime even when I am busy at work. CMI Bitesize Level 5 offers seven high impact micro learning courses for aspiring of practicing middle managers. Each course costs just £150.00 and has a timescale of 3 months for completion. CMI Bitesize courses include:

Mike opted to do six of the Bitesize courses and is working through each of them individually. “I really liked the sound of all the courses and felt they would add to my understanding and performance as a manager.”

Each course is a mix of practical tools, case studies, checklists, videos and real-world insights.

Mike added: “I really like the video aspect of the courses. They’re short enough to watch during a lunchbreak even when I am flat out at work.”

He aims to complete the courses by the end of the year. “Whenever I complete a stage within a course, Sarah checks everything over and provides feedback. It is incredibly valuable to get a non-work perspective and also keep me on track with my learning.”

Mike is enjoying Bitesize so much so that he hasn’t ruled out doing the full CMI Leadership and Management Level 5 qualification once he completes Bitesize. The learnings from Bitesize can be mapped across to Level 5, reducing the length of the full course.

Mike added: “I’m really enjoying Bitesize, both the learning aspect and seeing my own progression through the modules. I am open to further learning. They’re giving me a new perspective to leadership and management and I’m looking forward to my new role as brand manager.”
