The importance of training in the workplace to develop an adaptable workforce
With automation constantly developing and eliminating the need for a number of roles, it’s estimated that 44% of employees’ current skills in the manufacturing and engineering sectors will need to be replaced by 2025.
Having a workforce than can adapt quickly is essential for companies that wish to thrive post pandemic,” says Sarah Temperton, Chief Executive of NLT Training Services.
According to The World Economic Forum, skill groups such as problem-solving, self-management and critical thinking are seen by employers as ‘rising in prominence’. Developing new skills on the job has also become more important, with 94% of business leaders expecting employees to learn while you work compared to 65% in 2018.
Sarah added: “The pandemic has forced us all to adapt in ways we might not have thought possible beforehand. All businesses now should have a structured training and development programme in place which allocates time to ensure employees are trained to respond effectively to change.”
With the demand for leadership and management training set to increase, NLT has launched its new Management Training Centre offering a range of course for businesses, including team leading, strategic management, coaching and mentoring.
The centre offers training and development in a range of Leadership and Management skills and competences at levels 3, 5, 6 and 7, accredited through the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
With only 1 in 5 managers having a recognised management qualification, research shows that 8 out of 10 UK workers rate access to personal development above a salary increase. But that isn’t the only benefit; others include:
- Addressing weaknesses – A weakness within the business may be present due to employees missing a key skillset. Whilst staff members lose out on work time when training, it’s often a far more efficient way to fill that gap compared to the long process of recruitment.
- Improving overall performance – Having your staff train frequently will not only improve their performance at work, but also help the company stay in front of competitors. It’s crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest courses, qualifications and legislations.
- Becoming a more attractive place to work – Training is now widely recognised as a huge company benefit, so demonstrating your enthusiasm for employee development can make your company more attractive to potential new recruits.
- Increased innovation – Learning new skills is a great way to ignite the creative spark within employees and can lead to brand new ideas for the business.
- Staff retention – Making sure your staff feel valued, appreciated and invested in is a huge part of creating a successful business model. Keep recruitment costs down and keep your team strong.
Sarah Temperton added: “The return on investment when training your workforce is far greater than the time ‘lost’ in the process. If you’re not doing it, there’s a good chance your competitors will be – don’t fall behind.”
