NLT Training Services is calling on engineering businesses across North East Derbyshire to get involved with this year’s Made in Chesterfield festival.

Organised by Destination Chesterfield and Derbyshire Education Business Partnership, the month-long festival in November is designed to show young people and their teachers the modern face of engineering and the many careers and job roles on offer within it.

To ensure as many young people get to experience the modern face of engineering, companies in the sector are needed to welcome young people from the area’s schools into their premises during Made in Chesterfield.

Last year NLT hosted students from the Bolsover School at its Chesterfield site, where they were given hands-on experience in engineering.  Eight year 11 students spent a day at NLT’s workshop in Chesterfield doing practical hands-on activities in welding and electrical and mechanical engineering overseen by NLT’s specialist trainers.

NLT’s welding simulator was a big hit with the students enabling them to get their basic technique right in a safe environment before progressing to real welding. In the workshop, the students also learned how to wire a plug and made a metal domino, guided by NLT’s own Apprentices.

Ryan Foster Edwards (15), one of the Bolsover School students who attended the NLT event, said: “I wanted to come to NLT because it’s a great experience before I leave school. I really enjoyed the day, especially the welding and making the dominoes. It was really good to do something different and practical away from the classroom. I liked how it was more relaxed and the tutors treated us like adults.”

Cathie Mitchell, NLT’s Head of Operations, added: “NLT has supported Made in Chesterfield since it started in 2013. And with 69,000 more engineers needed in Britain to meet current and future demand in the industry, it is more important than ever that training providers and employers in the sector join forces to attract the next generation of workers.”
