YOUNG FEMALE ENGINEERS CHALLENGE GENDER STEREOTYPES
The number of young women taking engineering qualifications at NLT Training Services in Chesterfield has increased by 100% in the past year, with a record number of female Apprentices now signing up for training in Welding & Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering & Fitting and Electrical Engineering.
Engineering Apprenticeships for school leavers are proving very popular with both young men and women, but recently Chesterfield-based NLT Training Services has reported a significant number of young females studying Electrical Engineering and Advanced Mechanical Engineering at NVQ Level 2 and Level 3.
Steve Meadows, chief executive at NLT Training Services, said: “Apprenticeships are having a huge impact on addressing the skills shortage in this region and employers are seeing huge benefits from investing in their own home grown talent, which is important in securing future innovation and productivity in their businesses.
“We are delighted to be at the forefront of removing gender stereotyping from the industry. There is a shortage of female role models within engineering, so we hope that the young women training at NLT can be ambassadors for this sector and help encourage more women to pursue engineering courses and careers. Hayley and others like her are proving that engineering really is a rewarding and challenging career for both sexes.”
Many of the girls are working as cable joiners, maintenance fitters, technicians and electricians at a range of impressive companies across Derbyshire, including Bulwell Precision, Fusion and Thorntons plc.
Hayley Grimson, who is 22 and lives in Chesterfield, is an Apprentice Maintenance Technician working in the electrical maintenance department at Chesterfield based Fusion Provida, an international manufacturer of polyethylene jointing technology.
Hayley is studying her NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering through NLT Training Services, as well as taking her BTEC National Certificate in Electronics and Electrical Engineering at Chesterfield College.
As an Apprentice Maintenance Technician at Fusion, Hayley’s main roles include machine installations and breakdown maintenance, making sure the moulding machines and other ancillary machinery are working efficiently.
Hayley Grimson explains: “Everyone always asks why I chose engineering and I don’t really have an answer! Following a career in electrics was something different and I just thought it sounded interesting and a great challenge.
“Lots of my friends were surprised when I went into engineering as it’s normally seen as a man’s world. However, there are so many opportunities though and different career routes including design, automation, technical, maintenance and development roles, that you really can have a varied and rewarding career. The best thing about my job is that it is really hands on and varied and I learn something new every day. Friends and family have been very supportive and I am really excited about what the future holds for me at Fusion!”
Hayley is half way through her Apprenticeship with two years left till she completes. “Through my Apprenticeship I will complete my Higher National Certificate (HNC), which is a highly recognised qualification within the industry. When I finish my Apprenticeship ideally I would also like to do my Higher National Diploma (HND) and even a University Degree.”
Sean Keavey, maintenance manager at Fusion met Hayley two years ago when he was interviewing candidates for three Apprentice positions within the company. He said: “Hayley is a fantastic Apprentice, her college work has been exemplary and she always gets stuck in and studies hard. Gender has never been an issue as it is more about the person and how dedicated and ambitious they are. We are delighted with how well Hayley is doing – she has proved she has the skills and ability to succeed in this role.”
Sean continues: “There is still a skills shortage of engineers in this region and we are trying to address this by recruiting Apprentices who will grow and develop within the company.”
